On Restraint

The most meaningful creative decisions are subtractions, not additions.

When we start a project, our instinct is to add. Features, options, styling, animation—each addition feels like progress. But progress is not accumulation. Progress is clarification.

Every element you add is a claim: this deserves attention. Most don't.

What Remains

When you commit to subtraction, you face a harder question: what actually matters?

This is not a theoretical exercise. The answer changes based on context, audience, goal. What matters for a portfolio is not what matters for a dashboard. What matters for a game is not what matters for a tool.

The discipline is having criteria, not preferences.

The Architecture of No

Constraints are not limitations. They are the structure that makes decisions possible.

Without constraints, every option is equally valid. That's not freedom—that's paralysis.

Real freedom comes from saying no. To good ideas. To clever features. to delightful interactions. Each no clears space for the yes that actually matters.

Practice

Start with everything. Then subtract until it breaks.

Add back the minimum that makes it work.

That minimum is your design.
